Upclose

I received a new gadget that attaches to my phone's camera.  I don't really know how to use it, but it's pretty interesting.

I Kind of Forgot.

I stopped posting things here because I got busy, and then nothing seemed momentous enough for a return post.  Mostly I started to play roller derby and my time all disappeared into that pursuit.  I am still doing that, and it is pretty much the best thing ever.  But this blog isn't about that.  It is about me trying to fit being an artist into the rest of my life.  So that is what I am going to do here: try to be more accountable to making time for making stuff.  Onward and upward.  -Polly

And now, a pictorial recap of  2012 and 2013.

All of September and October

I took a lot of pictures in September and October.  Really a lot of pictures.  Of all those pictures, I have ten favorites.  Nine out of the ten were taken all in the same five minutes of an amazingly still and glowing evening.  Number ten is different, but still a favorite picture and moment from the fall.  -Polly

Borderland

On the last day of summer vacation we spent several hours wandering the woods and paths at Borderland
State Park.  Having seen the few pictures on the website, I thought I would be really interested in the historic mansion.  In person, I  enjoyed the quieter areas around the ponds and farmhouse even more. ~Polly

August Morning

Right now I am avoiding looking at today's big picture which includes sanding, painting, huge piles of books, toys, and furniture to reorganize, and two boys that do not want any part of the reorganizing project.  -Polly

Insect Season

I have been thinking about bugs a lot  lately.  Now framed and visible is the bug that I drew in February.  I took Amy Bartlett Wright's course The Artful Insect : Entomological Illustration at RISD.  We studied insects under high magnification and drew them in the traditional style of scientific illustration.  I drew this leaf footed bug that I believe is Leptoglossus Occidentalis from the instructor's collection.

I am trying to start my own collection of hard bodied insects to draw.  For now I am freezing anything that looks interesting and planning to pin them properly later.

We are currently having an unpleasant experience with Lyme disease that has caused us to increase our searches for ticks on the bodies' of dogs and people. Also Willa has been actively enjoying her hobby of jumping and snapping at any flying insect that comes her way.  She is so tall that the snapping teeth can come near the face of a standing adult.  Knowing this makes us even more aware and perhaps more bothered by flies in the kitchen.  It is only the beginning of bug season here.  -Polly

Blithwold

Sunday we visited Blithwold again.  Though the grounds and mansion are very grand and expansive, it is almost always the details that I enjoy most. -Polly

Hobby

I have two new hobbies.  Each one is challenging and demanding a little more of me than I expected.  Both require training.  Both have some potential to end badly.  Both new hobbies are also even more wonderful than I expected.  -Polly
